Our Bookstore Owner wins the 2016 Coretta Scott King Honor!
Congratulations are in order as Mr. R. Gregory Christie the owner of GAS-ART GIFTS is a recipient of the Coretta Scott King Honor in Illustration for 2016. The honor is given to Mr. Christie for his work in The Book Itch: Freedom, Truth & Harlem’s Greatest Bookstore written by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson. A committee with the American Library Association determines the candidates and finalizes the award winners. According to the A.L.A. website, the selection of Mr. Christie was decided upon the fact that he “promotes understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream of a pluralistic society.” The A.L.A. states that the honor was created to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King, for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood.
This will make Mr. Christie a four time honoree to receive the Coretta Scott King Honor in Illustration. He was recognized for his previous works in 2006 for Brothers in Hope: The Story of the Lost Boys of Sudan written by Mary Williams, in 2001 for Only Passing Through: The Story of Sojourner Truth written by Anne Rockwell, and in 1997 for his work in The Palm of My Heart: Poetry by African American Children edited by Davida Adejouma.
